August 2 in Newnan: “Planting with Purpose:  Making the Best Decisions in Choosing, Placing, and Planting Trees for your Design or Project”

This in-person program (with virtual option) will cover the best tree species for your plan or project, constraints to consider when planting your trees, and planting free trees on private property: understanding urban residents’ motivations and hesitations.  

Agenda:

9:00 – 9:05 a.m.        Welcome from GTC Executive Director, Mary Lynne Beckley, and President, David Shostak

9:05 – 9:10 a.m.         Update on Newnan’s replanting efforts following the 2021 tornado with Scott Berta, Plant Newnan

9:10 – 10:10 a.m.        The Best Tree Species for Your Plans or Projects with panelists Tim Thoms, Thoms Trees & Plants, Fayetteville; Mike Furbush, City Arborist, Newnan; Andrea Greco, Landscape Architect, Root Design Studio, Tucker.
Panelists will discuss their suggested best trees for the following needs:
Shade
Screening
Noise barrier
Wildlife
Aesthetics
Food
Storm water


Five minute break


10:15 – 11:00 a.m.       Location, Location, Location:  What are your Constraints?  Micah Lipscomb, Landscape Architect and Arborist, Perkins +Will, Atlanta.
Micah will talk about considerations when planting trees. What size will your tree be in the future regarding trunk size, root flair, height, and canopy cover?  Are you planting for example, near buildings or in grass strips?  Are you in aretail setting with signage?

Five minute break

11:05 – 11:45 a.m.       Planting with Purpose on Private Property:  What is the current research on how community residents decide to plant trees in their yards through free tree distributions?  Meg Morgan of Root Nashville will report and discuss the findings in her project and recently-published paper (with Paul D. Ries), “Planting free trees on private property: understanding urban residents’ motivations and hesitations.”
