LARE Projects available in DeKalb County

The LARE Program is a statewide water quality protection initiative administered by the Department of Natural Resources.  Funded from a $5 portion of the state-collected annual boat license, LARE provides technical and financial assistance to landowners and producers for solving erosion and nutrient-related problems. For more information about the LARE program, contact our office.

Story Lake LARE Project:
A Lake and River Enhancement grant project for the Big and Little Turkey Lakes watershed, which includes the Story Lake watershed in DeKalb County, has available $35,000.00 for cost share funds to reduce soil erosion and protect the water quality of these areas.  The LARE grant will cost share installation of grass cover, filter strips, and structures to improve water quality by reducing sedimentation and nutrient runoff.

Ball Lake LARE Project:

The Ball Lake Watershed is split between Steuben County to the North and DeKalb County to the South.  It covers parts of Steuben, Otsego, Smithfield, and Franklin townships.  This particular watershed is primarily farm-oriented, with 80 percent of land being used for agricultural purposes.  The Ball Lake Watershed is made up of 7,609 acres of forests, fields, wetlands, and wildlife habitats.  The strong diversity of land use makes this watershed very unique and interesting.

The Ball Lake LARE Project has cost share funds available to landowners in the watershed to help improve water quality, reduce sedimentation & nutrition loading by  implementing conservation land treatment practices.   Funds available are:
80% Cost-share is available for practices within 1 mile of Ball Lake or 1/2 mile of a perennial stream within the watershed.
65% Cost-share is available for practices over 1 mile from Ball Lake or over 1/2 mile of a perennial stream within the watershed.

Conservation Practices Available for LARE Cost-Share are:

*Conservation Tillage- 30+% residue
*Cover Crop- Wheat, rye, or legume seeded for winter cover

*Critical Area Seeding- A permanent grass cover on steep slopes

*Diversion- Diverting water runoff to prevent soil erosion
*Fencing- To fence livestock out of streams and ditches
*Filter Strips- Permanent strips of grass along streams and ditches to prevent sediment flow
*Grade Stabilization Structure- A structure or a pipe to let water enter a ditch
*Grassed Waterways- For gully erosion
*Livestock Watering Facilities- To install alternate watering systems

*Nutrient Management- The correct usage of manure and fertilizer

*Pasture and Hayland Planting- To establish hay or pasture
*Pest Management- Proper management to control weeds, insects, etc.
*Sediment Control Basins- To construct a basin to collect sediment
